Miami Dade College Lady Sharks Softball player Megan Garfinkel was named to the 2017 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Class today. Garfinkel joins a group of student-athletes who have been recognized for their contributions on and off the field. "In addition to their athletic ability and academic performance, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership." Garfinkel joins the company of 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Class member and former MDC Lady Shark teammate Erin Sundook.
As a freshman, Garfinkel received several Florida College System Activities Association Athletics (FCSAA) awards. Juggling school and softball, she received honors such as the: 2016 FCSAA All-Academic Team 3.30 GPA & Higher, NJCAA Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement 3.80-3.99 GPA, Southern Conference All-Academic Team, and FCSAA All-Academic Team.
In addition to school and softball, Garfinkel was involved in several community service activities. Alongside her teammates, she helped the special needs at Atlantis Academy, fed the homeless at the St. James Baptist Church, and participated in the Live Like Bella Childhood Cancer Foundation. At Miami Dade College Garfinkel participated in MDC's Spooky Night for Kids, Rumbamania Zumba-Thon, Leadership Workshop, and Shoebox Gifting during Thanksgiving. Garfinkel also participated in a food drive at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Now a sophomore, Garfinkel is working towards getting her AA Pathway to a major in Teaching. On the field, Garfinkel has contributed to helping the Lady Sharks place second in the 2017 NJCAA Region 8 Div. 1- Southern Conference with a 6-2 record.
