MDC Sharks at the State Tournament

On May 10th, the MDC Baseball team headed to Lakeland, FL, to the FCSAA DI/NJCAA South Atlantic District Baseball State Tournament for the third consecutive time. During the Barbecue Banquet, the D1 FCSAA All-State was announced. Herick Hernandez and Wooyeoul Shin made First Team All-State, and Max Galvin made Second All-State, while sophomore Wooyeoul Shin was named FCSAA Gold Glove winner for outfield.
The MDC Sharks kicked off FCSAA State Tournament on May 12, playing against State College of Florida- Manatee. Herick Hernandez started the game for the MDC Sharks, only allowing six hits and three runs over five and third innings and striking out five and working zero. The Sharks tied the game with three runs at the bottom of the seventh inning when Max Galvin singled on the first pitch of bat, scoring one run. At the bottom of the ninth inning, Joseph Zamora hit into a fielder's choice, allowing the Sharks to score a run and win the game with the final score of 4-3. The Sharks tallied seven hits, with D'angelo Ortiz, Richard Benitez, and Max Galvin having multiple hits.The Sharks advanced to the next round of the tournament. Their next opponent was the College of Central Florida on May 13. Going into this game, the Sharks knew this was going to be a challenging game. Kader Rabagh pitched five innings, only allowing two runs on four hits and striking out three. Max Galvin, Richard Benitez, Victor Davila, and Jose Hernadez were all able to collect one hit each. Unfortunately, the Sharks struggled with their offense and lost to Central Florida with the final score of 0-6.For the Sharks to get a chance at the Championship title, they would first have to defeat Northwest Florida State College on May 14. Ervis Solis was the starting pitcher for the Sharks. Ervis went two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits. Carlos Nolasco also pitched for the Sharks, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out three and walking one within four innings. The MDC Sharks were down by four runs in the sixth inning, but the Shark's comeback fell just short by one run. The Sharks scored three runs by Wooyeoul Shin, a double from Edward Gonzalez in the seventh inning, and a groundout by Gonzalez in the ninth inning. Wooyeoul Shinm, Joseph Zamora, Max Galvin, and Richard Benitez each collected multiple hits during this game. Also, Wooyeoul Shin went 3-for-4 at the plate. Unfortunately, the Sharks were defeated by Northwest Florida with the final score of 7-8. This loss concluded the MDC Baseball journey in the State Tournament.Named to the FCSAA All-Tournament team were Max Galvin and Richard Benetiz for their outstanding play in the tour ent. The MDC Baseball team concluded their season with a final record of 34-16-1, placed third in the State, and nationally ranked 12. Overall the Baseball Team had an excellent season.
