Miami Dade Falls to State College of Florida
Miami, FL - The Miami Dade Sharks dropped a 9-4 decision to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota on Thursday after a pair of big innings from the visitors shifted momentum late in the game.
The Sharks struck first in the opening inning when Jendy Gonzalez crossed the plate during a double-play ball to give Miami Dade an early 1-0 lead. Miami Dade extended the advantage in the fourth as Miguel Colmenares launched a solo home run to left field, putting the Sharks ahead 2-0.
State College of Florida responded with a five-run fifth inning to flip the game. A two-run single from Ryan Kaitz, an RBI hit from Dominic Woodward, and a two-run home run by Ben Ryan pushed the visitors in front 5-2.
SCF continued to build the lead in the sixth inning, plating three more runs behind RBI production from Karson Grout and Woodward to extend the advantage to 8-2.
Miami Dade chipped away late. Denixon Suarez delivered an RBI single in the seventh to bring home Samuel Castro, and the Sharks added another run in the eighth when Gonzalez scored on a fielding error, trimming the deficit to 8-4.
State College of Florida added an insurance run in the ninth on Grout's RBI single to seal the 9-4 final.
Colmenares led the Sharks offensively with two hits including his home run and an RBI, while Gonzalez and William Polanco each recorded two hits. Castro also added a pair of hits for Miami Dade.
On the mound, Samuel Alonso took the loss after allowing five runs over five innings. Miami Dade used four relievers the rest of the way.
The Sharks finished with 10 hits but were unable to recover from the visitors' eight combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
