The Miami Dade College men's basketball team nearly came out with a victory last night against the No.2 ranked team in the nation, Indian River State College. It was a competitive, back and forth battle the whole game as neither team gained a double digit lead.
The last time these teams played against one another, Indian River blew out the Sharks 81-54. This game did not start the same way however. The Sharks' defense kept them in the game during the first half especially on the perimeter. Indian River had trouble shooting from long distance last night as they only hit 27% of their three point attempts. Overall, the Sharks held the Pioneers to 32 points and had a two point lead going into the half.
In the second half, both teams picked up the pace on offense. The Sharks' three point shooting sparked their offense thanks to clutch shots by Dante Pace and James Horton. The Pioneers were able to rally late in the game and force overtime with timely baskets and shooting close to 80% from the free throw line. With the game tied, the Sharks had one more chance to win the game. Unfortunately, they had to take the ball down the court and a last second, three point heave by Marco Downer rimmed out.
In overtime, the Pioneers outscored the Sharks 14-10. MDC had two costly turnovers to start the period and that helped Indian River take the lead and ultimately the victory. Jonathan Cisse led the way for the Pioneers with 22 points while coming off the bench.
With the season officially coming to an end, the Sharks finished with a 10-17 overall record and had a winning record at home at 8-7. Indian River State College will move on to compete in the FCSAA Tournament in Niceville, FL
