Miami Dade’s Upset Bid Falls Just Short in FCSAA Quarterfinal
Niceville, FL — 8th seeded Miami Dade pushed top-seeded Northwest Florida State to the brink Wednesday night, but the Sharks' late rally came up just short in a 64-61 loss in the quarterfinal round of the FCSAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.
Facing the tournament's No. 1 seed, Miami Dade delivered one of its grittiest efforts of the season and had the game within a single possession in the final seconds before Northwest Florida State was able to seal it at the free-throw line.
Anthony Breland led the Sharks with a game-high 23 points, adding seven rebounds and six assists in an all-around performance. Randy Smith added 14 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers in the final minutes, while Leeroy Nijean finished with 13 points and six rebounds. David Verstraeten chipped in eight rebounds and two blocked shots as Miami Dade battled on both ends for the full 40 minutes.
Miami Dade set the tone early and built a 26-19 lead midway through the opening half after an aggressive defensive stretch sparked transition opportunities. The Sharks continued to answer every push from Northwest Florida State, with Nijean and Breland helping Miami Dade hold a 30-24 advantage with just over four minutes remaining in the half.
But the Raiders closed the opening period on a 12-0 run, flipping the game and taking a 36-30 lead into the locker room. That surge proved critical in a game where every possession mattered.
Northwest Florida State stretched its lead to 10 points midway through the second half, but Miami Dade refused to go away. Breland kept the Sharks within striking distance throughout the period, and Verstraeten and Nijean delivered key baskets down the stretch to keep the pressure on the tournament favorites.
Trailing 61-56 with just over a minute to play, Miami Dade got a huge three-pointer from Smith to make it a two-point game. After another defensive stop opportunity, the Sharks again pulled within two when Smith knocked down another triple with 1:01 left, cutting the deficit to 61-59.
Miami Dade had chances in the closing seconds and continued to fight at the foul line, eventually trimming the margin to 62-61 with four seconds remaining. The Sharks could not get the equalizer to fall, and Northwest Florida State closed the game out with two free throws in the final second.
Despite the loss, Miami Dade more than held its own against the nation's 8th ranked team. The Sharks shot 44.2 percent from the floor and limited Northwest Florida State to 38.6 percent shooting, but the Raiders' edge on the glass proved decisive. Northwest Florida State outrebounded Miami Dade 36-27, including 13 offensive rebounds that led to key second-chance opportunities.
DJ Shine paced Northwest Florida State with 18 points, while Justin Burns recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Miami Dade closes its season after a fearless quarterfinal performance that nearly produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets. Against the top seed on one of the biggest stages of the year, the Sharks showed the toughness, poise and fight that defined their run all season long.
