Handa Deals as Sharks Edge Salt Lake, 2–1
Fort Myers, FL- Miami Dade leaned on a dominant performance in the circle and timely execution at the plate to secure a 2–1 victory over Salt Lake Community College on Saturday, holding off a late push to close out the win.
The Sharks struck first in the second inning when Makayla Deleon lined a single to left field, bringing home Amanda Handa to give Miami Dade a 1–0 lead. Salt Lake answered in the third, as Taitumn Reynen delivered an RBI single to center to even the game at 1–1.
Miami Dade regained the advantage in the fourth inning after Sofia Reyes reached and later came around to score on a Salt Lake throwing error, giving the Sharks the go-ahead run that ultimately stood as the difference.
From there, the game belonged to Amanda Handa. The sophomore right-hander out of Brazil turned in a complete-game effort, allowing just two hits and one run across seven innings while striking out eight. Handa worked around four walks and consistently limited hard contact, retiring key hitters in pressure situations to preserve the lead.
Offensively, Miami Dade finished with five hits, led by Makayla Deleon's two-hit performance and RBI. Handa also contributed at the plate with a triple, while Daniela Olvera Rodriguez reached base three times via walks to help keep innings alive.
Salt Lake's Paige Fennell matched Handa pitch-for-pitch for much of the afternoon, striking out nine over seven innings, but Miami Dade capitalized on limited opportunities and backed its pitching with enough defense to secure the win.
