Sharks Run-Rule Polk State in Game 1
Miami, FL— Miami Dade opened its doubleheader in dominant fashion on Tuesday afternoon, overwhelming Polk State College 14-0 in five innings behind a powerful offensive performance and a masterful outing in the circle from Amanda Handa.
The Sharks wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Miami Dade strung together a series of aggressive at-bats and timely hits to quickly put Polk State on its heels. Alyssa Densmore got the scoring started with a two-run single to center field, bringing home Caroline Mito and Coral Latshaw. Moments later, Cate Haggerty delivered another two-run knock to extend the early lead.
Makayla Deleon added to the rally with an RBI single before later stealing second and advancing on a throwing error that allowed another run to cross. Mito capped the explosive inning with an RBI single to center, giving the Sharks a commanding 7-0 advantage after just one frame.
Miami Dade continued to apply pressure in the third inning, plating seven more runs to put the game firmly out of reach. Deleon reached on an error that brought home Sofia Reyes before Mito struck again with a two-run single to right field. Coral Latshaw followed with an RBI single and later scored on a throwing error, while Haggerty lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in another run. Maria Julia Pedroso capped the inning with an RBI single to center, pushing the lead to 12-0.
In the circle, Amanda Handa was nearly untouchable. The right-hander scattered just two hits across five scoreless innings while striking out seven and walking one to earn her eighth win of the season. Handa faced only 18 batters and kept the Polk State lineup off balance throughout the afternoon.
The Sharks finished with 13 hits on the day, led by Caroline Mito's three-hit performance that included three RBIs and two runs scored. Coral Latshaw added two hits and a run driven in, while Maria Julia Pedroso also collected two hits with an RBI. Deleon, Densmore and Haggerty each drove in multiple runs during the offensive surge.
Miami Dade will look to sweep Polk State as they get set to start Game 2 at 4:00 PM.
