Sharks defeat Bucs in National Championship rematch
The Miami Dade College Sharks triumphed in a thrilling five-set battle over the top-ranked Florida Southwestern State College Buccaneers, remaining undefeated with a 13-0 record. The Sharks claimed the victory, rallying back after being down 2-1 in sets.
Miami Dade started strong, winning the first set 25-23 behind a balanced offensive effort, but Florida Southwestern bounced back, taking the next two sets with efficient hitting, posting .455 and .346 hitting percentages in sets two and three, respectively. The Buccaneers were led by standout Abby Toeniskoetter, who tallied a match-high 21 kills at an impressive .475 hitting percentage.
However, the Sharks found their rhythm in the fourth set, capitalizing on key errors by the Buccaneers and firing back with a .281 hitting percentage of their own. Luyeisy Marquez and Katielle Altagracia Alonzo Vargas stepped up for Miami Dade, with Alonzo Vargas finishing with 22 kills and 24.5 points to lead the team.
In the decisive fifth set, Miami Dade edged out a nail-biting 16-14 win, anchored by critical defensive plays from Mia Martinez, who recorded 19 digs, and strong net presence from Esthefany Rabit, who contributed 9 kills and 4 block assists.
With the win, the Sharks improve to a perfect 13-0 on the year and 4-0 in conference play. They will travel up tonight to Gainesville to take on Santa Fe on Wednesday night.
