Sharks Fall in National Championship Rematch Against FSW
In a highly anticipated rematch of the last three national championship finals, the Miami Dade Sharks came up short against Florida SouthWestern State College, falling 3–1 on Thursday night in a top-10 showdown.
The Sharks came out strong, taking the opening set 25–17 behind efficient attacking from Luyeisy Marquez-Moreno and Angelica Rodriguez. But the Buccaneers responded with three straight sets, using their depth to pull away in the late stages.
Marquez-Moreno led MDC with 13 kills, adding 13 digs and five total blocks, while Rodriguez posted 12 kills. Setter Eleonora Gicheva ran the offense with 32 assists and chipped in 18 digs on defense. Maria Fernanda de Lima Varela also provided an efficient spark with six kills on a .250 clip.
Despite the Sharks' gritty effort, FSW's Sara Gamboa proved unstoppable with a match-high 23 kills on .311 hitting, while Letizia Okonofua added 15 kills. The Buccaneers hit .316 in the second set and carried momentum the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Miami Dade hit just .121 as a team compared to FSW's .171, struggling to maintain consistency after the opening frame. The Sharks were also edged in digs and blocks, as the Buccaneers capitalized on key rallies.
The loss marks MDC's first defeat in conference play this season and comes in a familiar setting, with FSW once again denying the Sharks in a national-stage caliber battle. Miami Dade will look to regroup quickly as they continue through Suncoast Conference action with postseason aspirations still firmly in sight.
