Despite a strong second-half push, the Miami Dade College Sharks came up short in a 2-1 loss to Monroe University on Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half where both teams battled for possession, Monroe struck first in the 58th minute when Braxton Richards broke through the defense and finished an unassisted goal. The Sharks quickly answered back in the 66th minute, as Daniele Malanga set up Nico Preciado for the equalizer, leveling the match at 1-1.
However, Monroe regained control less than ten minutes later. Richards again made his presence felt, assisting Reno Ishida in the 76th minute for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Sharks tallied seven total shots, with four on goal, highlighted by Malanga's two shots on frame and Vigil's lone finish. Goalkeeper Samuel Cavo kept Miami in contention with five saves on seven shots faced.
On the other end, Monroe's attack generated 17 shots with eight on target. Richards led the way with five shots, two on goal, and a goal plus an assist, while Ishida sealed the victory with his late strike.
The match saw its physical moments as well, with Miami Dade picking up three yellow cards. Despite late pressure, the Sharks couldn't find a second equalizer and dropped to 2-5-2 on the season. Monroe improved to 3-3.
