The Miami Dade College women's soccer team earned one of its biggest wins of the season on Wednesday, defeating No. 9 Eastern Florida State College 2–1 in a thrilling conference matchup. With the victory, the Sharks improved their record while knocking off a nationally ranked opponent on the road.
Eastern Florida struck first in the 12th minute when Maja Lundin converted off assists from Rebecca Barros and Jazira Gonzalez to give the Titans a 1–0 lead. Miami Dade answered quickly, however, as Julia Gurgel buried the equalizer in the 22nd minute on a feed from Camila Martins Viera.
The match remained level deep into the second half before Gurgel once again delivered for the Sharks. In the 61st minute, the forward calmly slotted home a penalty kick to put MDC ahead 2–1. The Sharks' defense held firm from there, with goalkeeper Ashley Fonseca recording four saves to preserve the upset win.
Miami Dade outshot Eastern Florida 13–8, including a 7–5 edge in shots on goal.
With Gurgel's brace and a resilient defensive effort, the Sharks secured a statement win against one of the top teams in the country, fueling their confidence as they continue conference play.
