No. 1 Sharks Take Down No. 2 Weatherford
In a matchup the entire country had circled, the top-ranked Miami Dade Sharks proved why they hold the nation's No. 1 spot, sweeping No. 2 Weatherford College 3-0 in a battle of the heavyweights on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks (9-0, 1-0) took the match 25-21, 25-20, 28-26, delivering a statement win against one of the most talented teams in the NJCAA.
The first set turned into more than just volleyball, it was a test of nerves. After a string of momentum-swinging kills, both sides traded staredowns at the net, setting the tone for the high-stakes matchup. Instead of folding under the pressure, the Sharks leaned into it, firing back with clean swings and clutch defense to snatch the opener 25-21 and set the tone.
Miami Dade displayed championship poise from there, hitting .303 as a team with 51 kills while limiting Weatherford to just .189 on the attack. Angelica Rodriguez paced the Sharks with 14 kills and two blocks, while Luana Borsatto added 12 kills and six digs. Luyeisy Marquez- Moreno chipped in 10 kills and a service ace, keeping the pressure on Weatherford throughout the night.
Setter Eleonora Gicheva was at the center of it all, running a high-speed offense with 38 assists, three service aces, and 11 digs, recording a true all-around performance. Defensively, libero Katianna Mejía Betancur anchored the back row with a team-high 21 digs, while the frontline presence of Eduarda Fabricio (six kills, seven total blocks) gave the Sharks a critical edge at the net.
Weatherford pushed hard, especially in the third set, where they extended the frame deep into extra points. But the Sharks' depth and composure carried them through, as Rodriguez and Borsatto delivered key kills down the stretch to close the 28-26 thriller and seal the sweep.
