Sharks Suffer 1st Loss
The nation's No. 1 Miami Dade Sharks suffered their first setback of the season on Friday night, falling in a five-set battle to host Salt Lake Community College (25–18, 18–25, 25–22, 17–25, 8–15).
The Sharks, competing down several key players, still showed fight from start to finish. Miami Dade opened strong with a dominant .500 hitting performance in the first set and reclaimed momentum in the third, but Salt Lake closed out the match with back-to-back wins in sets four and five.
Despite the loss, multiple Sharks stepped up. Angelica Rodriguez powered the offense with 17 kills, while Luyeisy Márquez-Moreno added 14 and Maria Fernanda de Lima Varela was efficient in the middle with 13 kills on .478 hitting along with four blocks. Setter Eleonora Gicheva had a standout all-around performance with 43 assists, seven kills, five service aces, and 12 digs.
Defensively, Katianna Mejía Betancur anchored the back row with 21 digs, while Márquez-Moreno and Eduarda Fabricio contributed at the net with four blocks apiece. Miami Dade finished with 63 kills and six aces but couldn't slow Salt Lake's balanced attack, led by 19 kills from Cameron Zajer and 16 from Paige Ballif.
Even with the short-handed roster, the Sharks pushed the match to five and showed resilience throughout. The result moves Miami Dade to 10–1 on the year as they continue their Salt Lake trip looking to bounce back quickly.
