Sharks Earn A Point Against #1
On neutral ground Friday night, the Miami Dade Men's Soccer Team showed it can hang with the very best. Facing Defending National Champion and Preseason No. 1 Iowa Western, the Sharks clawed back in the closing minutes to secure a dramatic 1–1 draw.
The match opened with both sides trading early chances. Miami Dade keeper Samuel Cavo was tested multiple times, including a close-range stop in the 37th minute to deny Angel Lopez. On the other end, Miami Dade's Matteo DePalo and Cheick Dounkasse forced Iowa Western's goalkeeper Fausto Delgado into key saves.
The breakthrough came at the 34th minute when Iowa Western was awarded a penalty kick. Felipe Braga calmly converted, giving the Reivers a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half intensified with the Sharks pushing forward, despite being plagued by fouls and discipline issues. The Sharks picked up five yellow cards and even saw a red card issued to the team bench in the 84th minute, leaving them in a difficult position down the stretch.
Still, Miami Dade never stopped pressing. Cavo stood tall between the posts, producing eight saves on the night, including back-to-back stops on Iowa Western's Kyohei Eguchi and Yamato Urakami as the Reivers looked to put the game out of reach.
Just when it seemed the match might slip away, the Sharks struck. In the 88th minute, Jeremy Levivier pounced on a loose ball inside the box and buried the unassisted goal past Delgado, his first of the season to level the score at 1–1.
Both sides exchanged frantic chances in the final moments, but Cavo and the Miami Dade defense held firm to secure the draw.
The Sharks will have a day of rest before taking on host and #2 ranked Indian Hills on Saturday.
